Lists

A list contains a series of items typically related to the main item or related to the visitor's profile. For example, a blog post can have a list of "related stories" or a list of "reader comments." Lists can be static (they never change) or dynamic (such as listing the 10 most recent related stories). Lists can contain other lists or any other module.

The following sections describe the various types of lists and how to create them.

Basic lists

Basic lists are lists whose content does not change. These lists provide links to other items in your Brightspot project.

Procedure. To create a basic list:
  1. In the content edit page, open or create the item to which you want to add a basic list.

  2. Toward the right of the widget, select |mi-more_horiz| > Overrides. A widget appears.

  3. Expand Layout. Drop-down lists Above, Aside, and Below appear for the module's position. (For an illustration of these positions, see the diagram Examples of module placement.)

  4. From one of the drop-down lists, select Replace. A drop-down list appears. (For an explanation of the possible selections for module placement, see Module placement.)

  5. Click |mi-add_circle_outline|, and select List. A form appears.

  6. In the Title field, enter a title.

  7. In the Description field, enter a description using the rich-text editor. For an explanation about using the rich-text editor, see Rich-text editor.

  8. From the Items list, select Basic.

  9. Click |mi-add_circle_outline|. A selection field appears.

  10. Click the selection field. The content picker appears.

  11. Select one or more items in the content picker, or create and select a new item.

  12. Close the content picker. You return to the List form, which looks similar to the following:

  13. From the Call to Action list, select a call to action.

  14. Click Publish.

Advanced lists

Advanced lists are lists of modules, which means you can build a list that includes a promo, a gallery, and even other lists.

Procedure. To create an advanced list:
  1. In the content edit page, open or create the item to which you want to add an advanced list.

  2. Toward the right of the widget, select |mi-more_horiz| > Overrides. A widget appears.

  3. Expand Layout. Drop-down lists Above, Aside, and Below appear for the module's position. (For an illustration of these positions, see the diagram Examples of module placement.)

  4. From one of the drop-down lists, select Replace. A drop-down list appears. (For an explanation of the possible selections for module placement, see Module placement.)

  5. Click |mi-add_circle_outline|, and select Ad. An Ad form appears.

  6. In the Title field, enter a title.

  7. In the Description field, enter a description using the rich-text editor. For an explanation about using the rich-text editor, see Rich-text editor.

  8. From the Items list, select Advanced.

  9. Click |mi-add_circle_outline|, and select a module. The corresponding form appears.

  10. Fill out the module's form.

  11. Repeat steps 8–9 to add additional items to the advanced list.

  12. From the Call to Action list, select a call to action. Your form looks similar to the following:

  13. Click Publish.

Dynamic lists

Dynamic lists are lists whose content satisfies various criteria. Examples of dynamic lists are reader comments and related articles, both of which can continually change.

When you create a dynamic list, you are actually defining search criteria. Every time a visitor loads a web page with a dynamic list, Brightspot searches for content matching the search criteria, and then populates the list accordingly.

Procedure. To create a dynamic list:
  1. In the content edit page, open or create the item to which you want to add a dynamic list.

  2. Toward the right of the widget, select |mi-more_horiz| > Overrides. A widget appears.

  3. Expand Layout. Drop-down lists Above, Aside, and Below appear for the module's position. (For an illustration of these positions, see the diagram Examples of module placement.)

  4. From one of the drop-down lists, select Replace. A drop-down list appears. (For an explanation of the possible selections for module placement, see Module placement.)

  5. Click |mi-add_circle_outline|, and select List. A form appears.

  6. In the Title field, enter a title.

  7. In the Description field, enter a description using the rich-text editor. For an explanation about using the rich-text editor, see Rich-text editor.

  8. From the Items list, select Dynamic. A form appears.

  9. Using the following table as a reference, design filters for the dynamic list.

  10. From the Call to Action list, select a call to action. Your form looks similar to the following:

  11. Click Publish.

Referring to the previous image, when a visitor loads a page with this dynamic list, Brightspot populates the list with 10 articles, sorted from newest to oldest, satisfying the following criteria:

  • Tagged as a recipe.

  • Published within the last 30 days.

The following table describes the fields you can use to design filtering criteria for a dynamic list. Your version of Brightspot may have different fields.

Field

Description

Types

Content types to include in the dynamic list.

Items Per Page

Number of items displayed in each page of results. If the dynamic list has more items than this value, Brightspot displays next and previous links so the visitor can page through the results.

Member Affinity Type

Limits the items to those associated with the selected affinity.

Time Period

Limits the items to those published within the specified number of days.

Tags

Limits the items to those having the selected tags.

Sort

Sorts the items.

Pinned Items

A list of items that always appears first in the dynamic list. These items do not need to satisfy the other filtering requirements. For example, if a pinned item is 60 days old, and the Time Period is 30 days, Brightspot includes the pinned item anyway.

No Results Module

Module to display if no items satisfy the filtering criteria.

Hierarchy

(various)

Limits the items to those appearing in the selected content hierarchy. For example, if under Sections you selected Wedding Cakes, then Brightspot limits the items in the dynamic list to those published under your site's section Wedding Cakes.

Classification

(various)

Limits the items to those associated with the selected classifications. For example, if under Author you selected Immanuel Kant, then Brightspot limits the items in the dynamic list to those published by Immanuel Kant.



Social feed

This feature requires the Express: Social Feed plugin. If your version of Brightspot is missing this feature, contact your Brightspot representative.​.

A social feeds pull postings from social networks into a list. You can also add a promo to this list.

  1. In the content edit page, open or create the item to which you want to add a social feed.

  2. Toward the right of the widget, select |mi-more_horiz| > Overrides. A widget appears.

  3. Expand Layout. Drop-down lists Above, Aside, and Below appear for the module's position. (For an illustration of these positions, see the diagram Examples of module placement.)

  4. From one of the drop-down lists, select Replace. A drop-down list appears. (For an explanation of the possible selections for module placement, see Module placement.)

  5. Click |mi-add_circle_outline|, and select List. A form appears.

  6. In the Title field, enter a title.

  7. In the Description field, enter a description using the rich-text editor. For an explanation about using the rich-text editor, see Rich-text editor.

  8. From the Items list, select Social Feed. A form appears.

  9. Under Main, do the following:

    1. In the Max Posts field, enter the maximum number of posts to retrieve from the social networks.

    2. Under Feed Providers, do the following:

      1. Click |mi-add_circle_outline|, and select one of the available social networks. A form appears.

      2. Click Account, and from the content picker select a social networking account.

      3. (Facebook feeds only) In the Page Name field, enter a page name.

      4. Repeat steps i–iii to add feeds from other social networks.

    3. Under Pinned Items, select an item to appear at the beginning of the social feed.

  10. Depending on your current theme, there is an Overrides tab with additional fields you can use to further define the module.

  11. From the Call to Action list, select a call to action. Your form looks similar to the following:
