Delivering ads with content

An ad is a module populated by an external ad agency such as Google Ad Sense. The following illustration is an example of an ad appearing over a headline.

Considerations for ad feeds

The following sections provide guidelines you should consider as you design your ad feed.

Different ads for different content levels

You can configure ads to appear at different levels in the content hierarchy:

Item

You can tailor an ad or ad feed for an individual item. For example, if you published an article about the final game of the World Series, you can tailor a distinct ad feed for that event.

Content type

The same ad or ad feed appears in all pages for a particular content type. For example, if you have blog posts, videos, and galleries, you can tailor a distinct ad feed for each content type.

Package

The same ad or ad feed appears in all pages of a package. If you are running a seasonal package around Halloween, you can tailor a distinct ad feed for costumes and candy.

Section

The same ad or ad feed appears in all pages of a site's section. If you have a gardening section and a cooking section, you can tailor a distinct ad feed to each section.

Site

The same ad or ad feed appears in all pages on the site.

Global

The same ad or ad ad feed appears in all items on all your sites.

Brightspot sends an ad request with the highest priority available. Referring to the previous table, Brightspot checks if a particular item has a specific ad feed (priority 1). If there is no such ad feed, Brightspot checks if one is configured for the content type (priority 2), and so on. As a best practice, configure a default ad feed at the global level so that your published content contains an ad—even for those levels in the content hierarchy for which you did not configure a tailored ad.

Ad sizes

Typically, ads appearing as banners are wide and short, while ads appearing within text are square. Google's Ad Manager also provides an option for specifying an ad size based on the size of the visitor's browser window. If the browser window is small, you can request a small ad; if the browser window is large, you can request a large ad.

Ad layout

Determine where on a page you want ads to appear. Publishers place ads above each item, below each item, wrapped inside each item, or combinations of all three. See the illustration Examples of module placement for examples of where you can lay out ads.

Blocking ads

You can block ads from appearing on your pages in a variety of circumstances.

  • Blocking by query string—You can use a query string to block an ad feed. The key for the query string is disableAds, and you can configure the value. For example, if you chose a value 567abcded, then the following URL blocks an ad feed.

  • Blocking ads in the preview pane—The preview pane provides a preview of your item before you publish it, including any advertisements. You can block ad feeds from appearing in the preview pane.

Configuring Google Ad Manager

Complete this procedure only if using Google Ad Manager as your ad provider.

Procedure. To configure Google Ad Manager:
  1. In your Google console, generate a script for ad tags. For details, see Generate ad tags.

  2. From the Navigation Menu, select Sites & Settings.

  3. In the Sites widget, select the site for which you want to configure Google Ad Manager, or select Global to configure Ad Manager for all sites.

  4. Under Front-End, expand Google DFP.

  5. In the DFP Tag Import field, copy the script you generated in step 1.

  6. Configure window sizes by doing the following:

    1. Under Window Sizes, click |mi-add_circle_outline|. A form appears.

    2. In the Width and Height fields, enter values for the window's minimum width and height in pixels. (You use this size when you configure an Ad Manager feed as described in Configuring an ad feed.)

    3. Repeat steps a–b to configure more window sizes.

  7. Click Save.

Configuring an ad feed

This section describes how to configure the ad sizes to retrieve from an ad service.

Procedure. To configure an ad feed:
  1. If you are configuring a feed for Google Ad Manager, ensure you completed the configuration described in Configuring Google Ad Manager.

  2. In your Google console, acquire the slot ID for your ad feed.

  3. From the Navigation Menu, select Sites & Settings.

  4. In the Sites widget, select the site for which you want to configure an ad feed, or select Global to configure an ad feed for all sites.

  5. Under Front-End, expand Ads.

  6. In the Disable Ads Parameter Value field, enter a value that blocks an ad feed. For an explanation of this field, see the section Blocking ads.

  7. Configure ad sizes to receive from the ad feed by doing the following:

    1. Under Ad Sizes, click |mi-add_circle_outline|. A form appears.

    2. In the Width and Height fields, enter values for the width and height in pixels.

    3. Repeat steps a–b to configure more ad sizes.

  8. Click Save.

  9. Return to the Ads accordion under Front-End. Brightspot lists the ad sizes you configured in step 7.

  10. If you want to prevent ads from loading in the preview pane, do the following:

    1. Under CMS Preview Disabled Ad Size, click |mi-add_circle_outline|. A selection field appears.

    2. Select one of the ad sizes you defined in step 7.

    3. Repeat steps a–b to block more ad sizes in the preview pane.

  11. To configure an ad feed from Google's Ad sense, do the following:

    1. Under Ad Modules, click |mi-add_circle_outline|, and select Ad Sense Ad. A form appears.

    2. In the Name field, enter a name for this ad feed. Administrators use this name when laying out ads on pages.

    3. In the Slot field, enter the slot ID you acquired in step 2.

    4. In the Ad Size field, select one of the ad sizes you defined in step 7.

    5. Repeat steps a–d to configure additional Ad Sense feeds for other ad sizes.

  12. To configure an ad feed from Google's Ad Manager, so the following:

    1. Under Ad Modules, click |mi-add_circle_outline|, and select DFP Ad. A form appears.

    2. In the Name field, enter a name for this ad feed. Administrators use this name when laying out ads on pages.

    3. In the Slot field, enter the slot ID you acquired in step 2.

    4. Select ad sizes to receive by doing the following:

      1. In the Sizes field, click |mi-add_circle_outline|. A selection field appears.

      2. Select one of the ad sizes you defined in step 7.

      3. Repeat steps i–ii to include additional ad sizes.

    5. Map ad sizes to browser window sizes by doing the following:

      1. Under Size Mappings, click |mi-add_circle_outline|. A form appears.

      2. From the Minimum Window Size field, select a window size. (The available window sizes are those you configured using the procedure described in Configuring Google Ad Manager.)

      3. From the Ad Sizes field, select an ad size.

      4. Repeat steps a–c to map more ad sizes to window sizes.

  13. Click Save.

Configuring ad layout

This section describes how to lay out your ads at various levels in the content hierarchy.

Procedure. To configure ad layout:
  1. Determine at which level in the content hierarchy you want to deliver ads. For an explanation of ads at different levels, see Different ads for different content levels.

  2. Review the ad feed configurations available for your version of Brightspot. (These are the configurations your administrator created as described in Configuring an ad feed.)

  3. In the content edit page, and using the following table as a reference, open or create the item (site, section, package, content type, or item) for which you want to lay out an ad.

    To create an ad feed…

    Do the following…

    At the global level

    1. From the Navigation Menu, select Sites & Settings.

    2. In the Sites widget, select Global. The Edit Global widget appears.

    3. Under Page Defaults, expand Layout.

    At the site level

    1. From the Navigation Menu, select Sites & Settings.

    2. From the Sites widget, select the site for which you want to deliver ads.

    3. Under Page Defaults, expand Layout.

    At the section level

    1. Create or open the section in the content edit form.

    2. Toward the right of the widget, select |mi-more_horiz| > Overrides. A widget appears.

    3. Expand Layout.

    At the package level

    1. Create or open the package in the content edit form.

    2. Toward the right of the widget, select |mi-more_horiz| > Overrides. A widget appears.

    3. Expand Layout.

    At the content-type level

    1. Create a content template based on the content type as described in Content templates.

    2. Toward the right of the widget, select |mi-more_horiz| > Overrides. A widget appears.

    3. Expand Layout.

    At the item level

    1. Create or open the item in the content edit form.

    2. Toward the right of the widget, select |mi-more_horiz| > Overrides. A widget appears.

    3. Expand Layout.

    In the Layout accordion, drop-down lists Above, Aside, and Below appear for the ad's position. (For an illustration of these positions, see the diagram Examples of module placement.)

  4. From one of the drop-down lists, select Replace. (For an explanation of the possible selections for module placement, see Module placement.)

  5. Click |mi-add_circle_outline|, and select Ad. An Ad form appears.

  6. Select an ad module. (If the ad module you require is not available, create it using the procedure described in Configuring an ad feed.)

  7. Click Save or Publish.
