Using an A/B Promo module

Editors use the A/B Promo module.

A/B Promo is a new module type that allows you to publish different variants of content in a promo to test the effectiveness of different images, titles, and descriptions by tracking the performance of each.

With an A/B Promo you can test whether a promo performs better in the following circumstances:

  • With a “teased” title (such as Company Makes Drastic Change to Employees’ Lives) vs. a more straightforward title (such as Company Shifts to Four-Day Work Week)
  • With a long vs. short description
  • With a specific call to action (such as The Major Shift) vs. a generic link (such as Continue Reading)
  • With an image of the exterior of a building vs. an image of people

Creating a new A/B Promo

Once the Split Testing plugin has been enabled and configured, you can create a new A/B Promo module anywhere in Brightspot where a Promo module can be published. See Deploying Split Testing plugin and Promos for more information.

If the content of the promo contains an image then each variant must also contain an image, which can be the same image or a different image.

To create an A/B Promo:

  1. In the content edit page, open or create the item to which you want to add a promo (for example, a page).

  2. Create and design the original promo using the A/B Promo module, which is similar to the Promo module. See Promos for further instructions.

  3. Under A/B Testing, click Add Variant and update the title, description, or image to make the variant. Add as many variants as you need.

  4. For Test Audience Percentage, specify the likelihood that the visitors to your site will see a variant instead of the original content. If there are multiple variants, this value will be split between them. For example, if there are four variants and the number entered is 40, there is a 60 percent chance the main promo will be shown and a 10 percent chance that each variation will be shown.

  5. Complete your site’s workflow and publish the promo.

Getting results from an A/B Promo

After creating an A/B Promo, you can view the impressions, clicks, and click-through rate for each variant, and end the test on the content edit page that contains the A/B promo.

To view results of an A/B Promo:

  1. Open the content edit page that contains the A/B promo.

  2. Open the A/B promo.

  3. Under A/B Testing, note the performance results of each variant. The results show the number of clicks, number of impressions, and the click-through rate as a percentage.

  4. Under A/B Testing or Main, note how long the A/B Promo has been published and either reset or end the test per the table below.

Action Result
Reset Reset removes all the existing performance data on all variants and sets the timer back to zero. If the test has already ended, click Reset to start it again.
End End stops any variants from displaying to the frontend.
