Creating a breaking news banner

Editors perform this task.

Using a breaking news banner, you can add a banner across the top of every page on your site to display an alert or important message, either indefinitely or for a specified period of time.

For example, you could add a breaking news banner to display the following:

  • A link to a new article on your corporate site about the announcement of the company’s new CEO or a new article on your news site about the arrest of a celebrity
  • A link to the website of another company to announce a new joint venture
  • A message on your site to alert customers that you had to change the time and location for a major event and set the message to display until the event’s end time

The banner displays with white text on a red background. There is no character limit for the text displayed on the banner, but editors should be mindful of the platform to which content is being published and the possible impact of lengthy text.

The banner appears on all pages of a site. When a visitor closes the banner, it no longer appears on any pages for that visitor.

Each site can only have one breaking news banner at a time. If an editor attempts to publish a new breaking news banner while one is active on the site, an error message displays.

To create a breaking news banner:

  1. In the header, click in the search field. The search panel appears.

  2. In the Create widget, select Breaking News Banner, then select New.

    • Select External, and enter a URL to the target item. Click Advanced to set the target and add attributes (optional).
    • Select No Link.
  4. In the Title field, enter text that will appear on the banner.

  5. (Optional) For Expiration, select Exact Date Expiration then select a date and time when the banner will be automatically removed from the site.

  6. Complete your site’s workflow and publish the Breaking News Banner widget. If you click Publish, an error message will appear if a breaking news banner is currently displayed on the site.
