YouTube is the world’s most popular hosting service for videos, along with competitors such as Vimeo, Wistia, and Vidyard. Using Brightspot, you can create your own video hosting service. The following instructions describe how to create a video hosting service with pages that are similar to the structure depicted below:

Step 1: Create the new site

Follow the directions in Creating a new site.

Step 2: Set up an ad service

In this step you specify the sizes of the ad to appear in your video pages.

  1. From the Navigation menu, select Admin > Sites & Settings.

  2. In the Sites widget, click the site you created in Step 1. The Edit Site widget appears.

  3. Under Front-End, expand Ads.

  4. Under Ad Sizes, click add_circle_outline. A form appears.

  5. In the Width field enter 800, and in the Height field enter 200. Your form looks similar to the following:

  6. Click Save.

  7. Continuing under Ads, under Ad Modules, click add_circle_outline, and select the ad service. A form appears.

  8. Fill out the form for the ad service using the ad size from step 5. Your form looks similar to the following:

  9. Click Save.

Step 3: Set up a page layout

In this step you create your site’s header, footer, and main section’s layout. The main section’s layout includes an ad before the video and visitors’ comments after the video.

  1. Continuing in the Edit Site widget, define the header and footer as described in Adding a header and footer.

  2. Under Page Defaults, under Module Placement, add a placeholder for the large advertisement above the video:

    1. From the Above list, select Replace.

    2. Click add_circle_outline, and select Ad. A selection field appears.

    3. Select one of the ad options. Your form looks similar to the following:

  3. Add a placeholder for visitors’ comments:

    1. Under Front-End, expand Community.

    2. From the Commentable Types list, select Video.

  4. Click Save.

Your video hosting site is now set up!

Step 4: Add content

Now you start the really hard work of recording your videos and the easy work of using Brightspot to publish them.

  1. In the header, click in the search field. The search panel appears.

  2. Under Create, select Video, and then click New. The content edit page appears.

  3. Under Provider, select HTML5.

  4. Click add_circle_outline. The Video File form appears.

  5. In the form, do the following:

    1. In the File field, select New Upload and click Choose.
    2. Navigate to and select the video you want to upload.
    3. In the Width, Height, and Duration fields, enter values as appropriate. If you leave the fields blank, Brightspot determines the values from the uploaded video.
  6. In the remaining fields, enter or select values as appropriate for your uploaded video. Your form looks similar to the following:

  7. In the Editorial toolbar, click Publish.

You can view your video at the permalink in the URLs widget.
