YouTube is the world’s most popular hosting service for videos, along with competitors such as Vimeo, Wistia, and Vidyard. Using Brightspot, you can create your own video hosting service. Here is the menu for setting a video hosting service whose pages have the following structure:

Step 1: Create the New Site

Follow the directions in Creating a New Site.

Step 2: Set Up Ad Size

In this step you specify the sizes of the ad to appear in your video pages.

  1. From the Navigation Menu, select Admin > Sites & Settings.

  2. In the Sites widget, click the site you created in Step 1. The Edit Site widget appears.

  3. In the Ads tab, under Supported Ad Sizes, click Add Ad Size. An Add Size form appears.

  4. In the Height enter 200, and in the Width field enter 800. Your form looks similar to the following:

  5. Click Save.

Step 3: Set Up Page Layout

In this step you create your site’s header, footer, and main section’s layout. The main section’s layout includes an ad before the video.

  1. Define the header and footer as described in Common Components.

  2. In the Page Layouts tab, under Module Placement, add a placeholder for the large advertisement above the video by doing the following:

    1. From the Above list, select Replace. A list of items appears.

    2. From the Add drop-down list, select Ad. A list box appears containing various ad options.

    3. Select one of the ad options. Your form looks similar to the following:

  3. In the Page Layouts tab, under Module Placement, add a placeholder for the reader comments by doing the following:

    1. From the Below list, select Replace. A list of items appears.

    2. From the Add drop-down list, select List. A form appears.

    3. In the Title field, enter Reader Comments.

    4. From the Items list, select Dynamic. A form appears.

    5. From the Types list, select Article.

    6. In the Items Per Page field, enter 10.

    7. In the Time Period field, enter 50. Your form looks similar to the following:

  4. Under Video, from Default Playlist, select None.

  5. Under Type Specific Overrides, don’t make any changes.

  6. Click Save.

Your video hosting site is set up!

Step 4: Add Content

Now you start the really hard work of recording your videos and the easy work of using Brightspot to publish them.

  1. From the Brightspot header, click in the search field. The Search Panel appears.

  2. Under Create, select Video and then click New. The content edit page appears.

  3. Under Provider, select HTML5. A Video File form appears.

  4. In the Video File form, do the following:

    1. In the File field, upload the video from you computer.
    2. In the Width, Height, and Duration fields, enter values as appropriate. If you leave the fields blank, Brightspot determines the values from the uploaded video.
  5. In the remaining fields, enter text as appropriate for your uploaded video.

  6. In the Sites widget, from the Owner list, select your site. Brightspot applies the settings you made in the previous steps.

  7. In the Publish widget, click Save Draft. The permalink appears in the URLs widget.

  8. In the Publish widget, click Publish.

Wait a few minutes for your page to go live on the host, and view it at the permalink!
